Graduate Certificate in Play Therapy
Program Description
A curriculum has been established for a specialty in play therapy. Students must complete four of the followingcourses:
1) CSLG 7142 Introduction to Play Therapy (required prerequisite for all courses except CSLG 6200)
2) CSLG 7143 Filial Therapy
3) CSLG 7144 Theory and Practice of Play Therapy
4) CSLG 7145 Special Topics in Play Therapy (may be repeated for credit as topics vary)
5) CSLG 6200 Introduction to Theories of Family Counseling
6) CSLG 7435 Internship in Counseling –OR–
CSLG 7430 Practicum in Counseling and Guidance (for students who are currently enrolled in the counseling program and receive permission from the Graduate Certificate Coordinator)
Students are required to take the following two (2) courses:
- CSLG 7142 Introduction to Play Therapy
- CSLG 7144 Theory and Practice of Play Therapy
Students must select one (1) course from the following two options:
- CSLG 7143 Filial TherapyOR
- CSLG 7145 Special Topics in Play Therapy: Group Play Therapy
Students must select one (1) course from the following courses:
- CSLG 7143 Filial Therapy
- CSLG 7145 Special Topics in Play Therapy (may be repeated for credit as topics vary)
- CSLG 6200 Introduction to Theories of Family Counseling
- CSLG 7430 Practicum in Counseling and Guidance (for students who are currently enrolled in the counseling program and receive permission from the Graduate Certificate Coordinator) OR
- CSLG 7435 Internship in Counseling (for students who are currently enrolled in the counseling program and receive permission from the Graduate Certificate Coordinator)
NOTE: All approved changes will be included in the Catalog and in the University degree evaluation system (CAPP).
Course Description:
Include subject prefixes and course numbers, full titles, credit hours, prerequisites and/or corequisites, concise descriptions, and an indication of when the courses are to be offered as to semesters and day/evening/weekend.
CSLG 7143. Filial Therapy. (3) Prerequisite: CSLG 7142. This advanced level play therapy course focuses on concepts and skills for training parents/caretakers/teachers to be therapeutic agents in their children’s lives through the utilization of child centered play therapy skills in regularly scheduled structured play sessions with children. (Alternate Fall Spring)
CSLG 7144. Theory and Practice Contemporary Theories of Play Therapy. (3) Prerequisite: CSLG 7142. An advanced exploration of fundamental issues involved in play therapy, this seminar course will focus on an in-depth study of various theoretical approaches, modalities, techniques, and applications of play therapy. Historical and theoretical foundations of play therapy are presented as are current issues in providing appropriate counseling services to children aged three to ten years old. (Alternate Fall Fall)
