A Major in German leading to a B.A. degree requires 32 31 credit hours, after beginning courses above GERM 1202 or GERM 1204are completed.

Additional Admission Requirements

All incoming students except learners of Japanese may take a UNC Charlotte Placement Exam in the language they wish to study if they have had previous experience with that language. Foreign language majors and minors may also take a placement exam to help them determine at what level they should begin studying their chosen language. Students should consult the department’s webpages for more specific guidelines regarding placement. Learners of Japanese should contact a Japanese professor directly in order to schedule an interview regarding placement.

Certificate in Translating Substitutions

Students majoring in German and seeking a Certificate in Translating German must also take TRAN 3401 3601, TRAN 4402G 4412, TRAN 4403G 4413, and TRAN 4404G 4414.,

but may eliminate two GERM courses at the 3xxx and one course at the 4xxx level from the requirements for the major listed above.

Certificate in Business German Substitutions

Students majoring in German and seeking a Certificate in Business German must take GERM 2210, GERM

4120, and GERM 4121, but may eliminate one of the

GERM 3050 courses and one other course at the

GERM 3000/4000-level from the requirements for the

majors listed above. GERM 2203, GERM 2204, GERM 3201 or GERM 3211, GERM 3202 or GERM 3212. They must take two courses (6 credit hours) chosen from GERM 3670, GERM 3680, and GERM 3690. Additionally, they must take GERM 4661 and GERM 4671.

Upon departmental approval, up to three six credit hours earned for GERM 4410

(Professional Internship) may replace one of the GERM 3000-4000-level courses. be chosen as a 4000-level option counting towards the major.

Grade Requirements

Introductory language courses may not be taken on a Pass/No Credit Basis if they are being used to fulfill a college or departmental foreign language requirement.

Students with a Foreign Language major or minor may not take required courses in the department on a Pass/No Credit Basis.

Teacher Licensure

The Department of Languages and Culture Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education, offers a program to

prepare students for K-12 teacher licensure in North Carolina. Students seeking licensure to teach a foreign language must fulfill the General Education

requirements, the foreign language major, two foreign language teaching methods courses, and satisfy all other requirements specified by the College of Education. Students planning to specialize in foreign language education should apply through the Coordinator for Foreign Language Education during the

first semester of the Sophomore year to obtain appropriate advising. Licensure applications are the responsibility of the student and the Office of Teacher

Education Advising, Licensure, and Recruitment (TEALR) in the College of Education.

Minor in German

A Minor in German requires six courses above the GERM 1202 or GERM 1204 level.

GERM 1203. Elementary German for Business and Engineering I. (3)

For students with limited or no previous experience in German and an interest in International Business and Engineering. First course in a four-course sequence to develop competence in culture, speaking and writing, listening and reading comprehension in German as well as competence in business and engineering specific vocabulary and culture.

GERM 1204. Elementary German for Business and Engineering II. (3)

Prerequisite: GERM 1201 or GERM 1203 or permission of department. Second course in a four-course sequence to develop competence in culture, speaking and writing, listening and reading comprehension in German as well as competence in business and engineering specific vocabulary and culture.

Review of grammar, composition, and conversation using film and/or readings on the culture andcivilization of German-speaking countries. Students who wish to continue with advanced offerings in German are advised to complete GERM 2202. Introduction to spoken and written language of the German-speaking business world. Acquisition of and practice with general commercial terminology used in

Prerequisite: GERM 2202 or GERM 2204 or permission of department. Conducted in German. Review of grammar, intensive oral and written work in the language through the study of literature and film.

GERM 3212. Advanced German Composition and Conversation II. (3)

Prerequisite: GERM 2202 or GERM 2204 or permission of department. Conducted in German. Further review of grammar, intensive oral and written work in the language through the study of literature and film.

Through the lens of German literature and film this course examines the Holocaust and focuses on historical, moral, and aesthetic issues in its representation.
