The request to revise the catalog Pre-Nursing and the Upper-Division Nursing Major

Pre-Nursing.  Freshmen seeking admission to the nursing major may be admitted as Pre-Nursing.  Transfer and change of major students who have not completed all prerequisites may be listed as pre-nursing.  In order to declare Pre-nursing, freshmen and transfer students admitted to the University must have a GPA of 3.0 based on all university/college course work.  In order to progress in Pre-nursing, students must meet the following:

1. Overall GPA of 3.0 or better at the completion of the courses in the first two semesters.
2. Grade of B or better in all pre-requisite science courses:

1. CHEM 1203 and Lab
2. CHEM 1204 and lab
3. BIOL 1273 and lab
4. BIOL 1274 and lab
5. BIOL 1259 and lab

3. Grade of B or better in the following pre-nursing courses:

1. NURS 2100: General Nutrition
2. NURS 2200: Human Growth and Development

4. Overall GPAA of 3.0 or better at the completion of courses in each of the For the prerequisite science courses and respective labs and for NURS 2100 and 2200, all of which require a grade of B or better, Pre-Nursing students can only have 1 grade of C or below for which they retook the course to earn a B or better.  Students earning more than one C in those prerequisite courses cannot remain in Pre-Nursing and must change their major, and are ineligible for admission to the upper division nursing major.
5. Completion of all nursing pre-nursing pre-requisite course with a pre-requisite GPA of 3.0 or better.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission decisions to the Upper-Division Nursing Major are made by the School for the Fall and Spring semesters of each academic year.  Not all applicants who meet the minimum requirements can be accommodated.  Applicants are competitively reviewed for admission based on their grade point average in the required prerequisite courses.  Consistent with University policy, the School offers admission to applicants whose credentials present the best qualifications among those meeting minimum requirements.

Minimum criteria for application to the Nursing major are:

1. A grade point average of 3.0 or better in the required prerequisite courses
2. A grade of A or B in the following prerequisite courses:

1. CHEM 1203 (or 1251) and lab

2. CHEM 1204 (or 1252) and lab

3. BIOL 1273 and lab

4. BIOL 1274 and lab

5. BIOL 1259 and lab

6. NURS 2100

7. NURS 2200

3. Completion of at least three (3) of the prerequisite sciences and their labs prior to applying.
4. For the prerequisite science courses and respective labs and for NURS 2100 and 2200, all of which require a grade of B or better, applicants can only have 1 grade of C or below for which they retook the course to earn a B or better.  Students having more than one C in those prerequisite courses are  ineligible for admission.
5. Completion of other required prerequisite courses by the end of the Spring semester prior to the Fall for which application is made and by the end of the Fall semester prior to the Spring for which application is made.
6. Students admitted to the pre-licensure nursing program must be certified as a Nurse Aide I (CNA I) and listed in the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry

Application to the nursing program is done online via NursingCAS.  Information about the online application process is available on both the School of Nursing and CHHS Advising Center websites.  The deadline for application is January 31 of the academic year preceding the Fall for which admission is sought, and August 31 of the academic year preceding the Spring for which admission is sought.  Admission decisions are communicated in writing by the School.  Applicants who are not admitted may reapply for a future term.

All students admitted to the pre-licensure B.S.N. curriculum must have prerequisite computer knowledge in using email, word processing (create/save/open/retrieve), file management, editing, formatting, and using an internet browser (search and navigate).
