(3) Buddhist origins in India, development of the Ch’an (Zen) school in China and Japan, and emphasis on the formative influences of Zen on Japanese art and culture. An exploration of the various ways the religious ideal of the bodhisattva has been imagined and employed in devotional practice in Mahãyãna Buddhist traditions in China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and the United States.
