These three new courses are courses available to students to complete the Thematic Electives related to the specialization area of Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education.

Degree Requirements

The M.Ed. in Child and Family Studies: Early Education requires a total of 33 semester hours of coursework.

Thematic Electives (9 hours)

To be selected from the categories of: Instructional Systems Technology, Teaching English as a Second Language, Leadership and Administration, Reading, Language, and Literacy; Research Methods; Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education; or an individually planned option, with advisor approval.

SPED 6111: Advanced Issues in EI/ECSE. (3) In-depth exploration of issues and evidence-based practices for young children with diverse abilities and their families in home, school, and community settings. Emphasis on current research, developmental/educational implications of disabilities, and leadership in early intervention and early childhood special education. (Fall)

SPED 6242: Enhancing Communication and Supporting Behaviors in Inclusive Settings: B-K. (3) This course is designed to provide professionals with in-depth knowledge regarding theories, evidence-based strategies, and best practices to provide effective social-communication interventions and support challenging behaviors of young children in inclusive settings. Prerequisite or Co-Requisite: CHFD 6102, CHFD 6210 (Spring)

SPED 6350: Young Children with Disabilities and their Families: Interdisciplinary Collaboration. (3) Explores issues and evidenced based practices specific to forming family-professional partnerships and collaborating across disciplines (e.g., EI/ECSE, early childhood education, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, social work, nursing, public health, education) to address the complex needs of young children with disabilities (or at-risk of developmental delays) and their families in natural and/or least restrictive environments (e.g., home, school, community settings, hospitals).
