Summary

The School of Nursing Undergraduate Curriculum proposes the following:

A. Revise the course objectives for NURS 4100: Nursing Care of the Aging Adult

Rationale for changes:

Change A. The course catalogue description will remain the same. The request to update the course objectives was made by the curriculum committee to integrate and update curriculum changes, and to reflect current frameworks with value- and evidenced-based objectives. The proposed changes to the objectives are:

Value-based Objectives:

  1. Identify care models and interventions influencing the promotion of quality of life and a meaningful aging process for the elderly.
  2. Describe how cultural and social attitudes/values influence successful/non-successful progression in aging.
  3. Explain the role of psychological well-being in old age as it relates to intellectual capacity, cognitive function, and social engagement.
  4. Evaluate the relationship between death and aging as a continuous life process.

Evidence-based Objectives:

  1. Identify physiological changes occurring as a normal process of aging.
  2. Describe the consequences of disease(s) associated with advancing age and the role of evidence-based care and interdisciplinary practice.
  3. Critique the relationship between common health practices and healthcare utilization influencing the aging process and health outcomes.
