Pre-Teacher Education Requirements
Prior to acceptance into the proposed minor in foreign language education, students would be required to take the following pre-education requirements:
- MDSK 2100 Diversity and Inclusion in U.S. Middle and Secondary Schools (3)
OR
- EDUC 2100 – Introduction to Education and Diversity in School (3) AND SPED 2100 – Introduction to Students with Special Needs (3)
The above courses have no pre-requisites and may be taken in the freshman, sophomore, or first semester of the junior year.
Students would also need to get a passing score on the PRAXIS I, ACT or SAT and have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Upon acceptance into the program, students would be required to take the following courses in the designated sequence:
Semester 1
One of the following child development courses:
SECD 4140 Adolescence and Secondary Schools (3)
MDSK 3160 Learning and Development Birth through Adolescence (3)MDLG 3130 Early Adolescent Learner (3)
AND:
- MDSK 3151 Instructional Design and Technology Integration (3)
AND:
One of the following foreign language methodology courses:
- FLED 4200 Teaching Foreign Language in Secondary Schools (3)
- FLED 4201 Teaching Foreign Language in K-8 Schools (3)
Note: During the first semester students also apply for the yearlong internship. The application must be approved by their undergraduate academic advisor in the Department of Middle, Secondary & K-12 Education and their advisor in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies. The application must then be submitted to the Office of Field Experiences, by appointment, during the first semester of professional education courses. Deadlines are late September and late February. Provided below are the requirements for admission into student teaching:
Advisor Recommendation for Admission to Student Teaching. Deadlines are April 1 and November 1.
- GPA of 2.75 in the major, with grades of C or better, can be attained before next semester.

Semester 2
In semester 2 students begin the first semester of the yearlong internship. In addition to this program requirement, students are to complete the following specialized courses:
- READ 3255 Integrating Reading and Writing Across Content Areas (W) (3)
AND
- EDUC 4290 Modifying Instruction for Diverse Learners in the Elementary School (3) OR EDUC 4291 Modifying Instruction for Learners with Diverse Needs in Middle/Secondary Schools
AND:
One of the following methods courses (the one not previously taken):
- FLED 4200 Teaching Foreign Language in Secondary Schools (3)
- FLED 4201 Teaching Foreign Language in K-8 Schools (3)
Semester 3
In semester 3 students complete the second semester of the yearlong internship which incorporates student teaching. Students are to complete the following courses:
- MDSK 4150 Assessment, Reflection, & Management Practices (3)
AND
- FLED 4469 Student Teaching /Seminar K-12 Foreign Language (O) (12)
