The University College Faculty Council (UCFC) has approved MATH 1340 (Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I) and MATH 1341 (Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II) as a mathematical and logical reasoning option for general education, effective Spring 2015.

MATH 1340. Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I. (3) Prerequisites: Math Level 2 or Permission of the Department. This course develops elementary teachers’ understanding of essential concepts of real numbers and algebra. Students will re-conceptualize their understanding of number systems, operations in these systems, and their properties. The course will help students develop their understanding of functions and their applications to real-life situations.

MATH 1341. Mathematics for Eiementary Teachers II. (3) Prerequisites: MATH 1340 or Permission of the Department. This course develops elementary teachers’ understanding of fundamental concepts of geometry, measurement, and data. Students will re-conceptualize definitions and properties of polygons and polyhedral including the concepts of perimeter, area, surface area, volume, transformation, and congruence and similarity. The course will help students develop their understanding of the organization, representation, and analysis of data, measures of central tendency and variation, and basic concepts of probability.
